Lifestyle | Mindful Mornings Routine (Tips) + Giveaway!

Hi, friends!

I did an Instagram poll a few weeks ago about this topic and I was so excited to see such a positive response from you guys! I've been trying new things for awhile now to create a good morning routine. I've been trying to create a mindful morning routine to really start my day off right! My mindful mornings might look different from yours and that's perfectly okay. Some things work great for others but not for you and vice versa. We all get up at different times and live different lives so it only makes sense that our morning routines will look different. What matters is that we each find unique ways that work for us to improve our day and overall wellness. I started searching for ways to enjoy my mornings because of how difficult mornings were for me. I often wake up feeling generally  unwell because of my chronic illness. My symptoms are worse in the morning too and I've spent years dreading them because of that. I realized the importance of starting my days off the best I can and that was the beginning of my search. I didn't want to dread mornings anymore!

Here are some things I do to add mindfulness to my mornings:

1) Start the day stating your purpose and daily intention

This one is my favorite because it shapes the way I look at my whole day. You can also do this one regardless of how much time in the morning you have. You can state your intentions while you're lying in bed, in the shower, on your commute to work, or some other time in your morning routine!
I like to say something like "I'm a child of God. I'm here to serve God and to serve others. I'm here to  bring light and show love. It's God first, then others, then me. I seek the kingdom of God above all things." You can always add some specific intentions in there too like "I will be an encouraging friend, wife, etc. today" "My value is in my soul, not in my achievements or appearance and I will remember that today" or "I will speak kindly to myself and to others today" ... really anything that you want to be in the forefront of your mind for that day.

2) Light a candle

This one might not be for you if you're not as big of a candle fan as me haha, but I love to light a candle in the morning! It's so nice to pray by candlelight. If you like to say a prayer in the morning, or meditate, a candle is a really nice addition to a peaceful space. I like to enjoy the coziness and the nice scent of a burning candle as a start my day.

3) Meditate, do some yoga, or stretch

I like to do gentle exercises in the morning. I wish I could work out, or go for a run first thing in the morning, but my body just can't swing it. I've tried and it always makes me sick. However, if it invigorates you to start with a run or a cycling class, go for it! If your body is more like mine and you feel better with gentle exercise in the morning, try some yoga or some stretches. I like how calm doing yoga and/or meditating makes me feel, so I like to fit that into my morning schedule. I also have morning headaches a lot so I try to do some head and neck stretches early on in my day.
4) Get some fresh air and sunlight

I don't know about you, but I have a really hard time waking up in the morning and feeling awake. If I get outside for a few minutes, I feel more awake! It just feels good to breathe in fresh morning air and take in some sunshine. Even on colder days, I'll bundle up and take a short walk, or read a small devotion outside. I need that sunshine so much, that I bought a sunlamp. On the gray days, I'll work with my sunlamp on for a few minutes to get some "sun" time in!

5) Sip on something nourishing

Coffee is my drink of choice, but I like lemon water to be the first thing I drink. I drink water infused with lemons almost every day. I love the taste. It's a great, refreshing drink to start the morning with! I also like to drink iced green tea. I like knowing that I'm putting something good into my body in the mornings!

6) Read a devotion, or write in a journal

I like to read a devotion and say a prayer to get me in the right mindset for the day. It's always a moment of encouragement and comfort for me. I'd like to start writing in a gratitude journal, but I haven't done that yet. I think it would be an uplifting exercise to write down a few things that I'm grateful for each day.
Whatever encourages you, write about that.

7) Make your bed

This one might sound silly, but it helps me feel accomplished and organized to make my bed in the morning. It's nice knowing you can mark a chore off your list early in the day. It's also a great feeling to come back to a nice, made bed at the end of the day!

*Nighttime Tips*
1) Imagine how you want your morning to be

I like to imagine my morning the night before. It really does help me to organize my tasks and thoughts about the next day. Also, it's helpful to think postively about the way the day is going to go. If there's something you aren't looking forward to, imagine it going better than expected! If you have trouble waking up, imagine getting up on time and having a nice morning. If anything, it makes for a better night's sleep!

2) Give yourself something to look forward to
It's nice to go to bed looking forward to something the next morning (especially if you're not a morning person). It could be yoga, a special breakfast, coffee, or your shower, anything that makes you excited about waking up!
